Sir Among those parts of the history of Pennsylvania which have occupied the attention, at different times, of this Society, is that long pending and important one of what are called the Connecticut claims, those assertions of title by which the State of Connecticut professed herself to be the owner of a large por tion of what at present constitutes the State of Pennsylvania, over which you preside.
Few claims ever made in this State have called forth a greater amount of research and legal ability, both in the support and in the refutation. Of them. The records of the arguments at the bar upon them remain, but imperfectly. But the numerous and ably written pamphlets which the claim evoked still exist to show what zeal the subject aroused, and what learning and talents it engaged.
