Publisher's Synopsis
The document is a brief introduction on the Sudanese economic development, setbacks and collapse. In the described and analyzed features it is concluded that the primary sector, agriculture still controls the economy. The contribution to the Gross Domestic Production was a mainstay to the economy. However, the continuous regression in productivity and total production have affected the annual records of the GDP. The country borrowed a lot of money under the pretext of utilization in converting Sudan into a food basket. Such plans did not materialize in good results. There were economic problems that prevented the country from paying the debts, arrears and interest rates. The entrance of oil discovery and commercial utilization in 1999 did not ameliorate the situation. The newly generated income was not used in improving the agricultural schemes, industry neither paying the accumulated debts. Increased security, arms buying and expanded governmental expenditure consumed most of the oil money. Presently, the country is harvesting the failure of its plans, mismanagement and bankruptcy with increased food insecurity, economic chaos, increased stagflation and social disruptions. Additional policy failures are manifested in increasing taxation, un-successful attempts to reduce government expenditure, collapsed value of the national currency. The dire situation calls for changes in macroeconomic policies, and cash inflows which probably will not be feasible under the current administrative and political regime.
