Why does the term dysfunctional sting for so many people? Is it because most people do not want to acknowledge the less than favorable parts of themselves or family? We believe it is a combination of reasons. It is multifaceted and very complex. In some cases, people are very sensitive and defensive when it comes to dysfunctional areas especially when they are comfortable with being in them. It has become a way of life for most people, almost an identity. When we confront these things, it sends people into an identity crisis. And with any crisis, there are techniques to help deescalate, manage or breakthrough. The end goal of any dysfunctional situation is to acknowledge what it is, take steps to change it, and then manage and maintain the new behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, or ways of being.
