Publisher's Synopsis
Materials science is making great strides in many ares: new high strength materials, high-Tc superconductors, artificial semiconductors epitaxially grown under non-equilibrium conditions, to name but three. These practical advances have stimulated considerable theoretical activity, which will lay the foundations for further refinements of these technologies. The link between our understanding of electrons in a solid and its structure has come to the fore of condensed matter studies in the past few years. It is no less than the key to our understanding of the solid state. The two-day Discussion Meeting entitles "Bonding and Structure of Solids" was intended to make a broad review of theoretical developments in this field with the help of exponents from the United Kingdom and from abroad. It was held in September 1990.;Specialists in several fields were drawn together to give a picture of the state of the art in a broad sweep of papers which give an overview to a rapidly expanding field.
