Karolena Kreisler, a young ex-pat German research surgeon, pushes the limits of human transplantation at a biotech company in North Carolina. After accidental infection by a virus, she develops a worsening of her chronic liver disease, complicated by an unusual loss of vision. An experimental transplant seems life saving, once a donor "micaculously" becomes available.
