Publisher's Synopsis

Provides a detailed picture of the numbers, needs and circumstances of visually handicapped people, based on the first ever survey of this kind in Great Britain. Their special needs with regard to mobility, shopping, reading, transport, housing and employment are described, and the survey gives the first reliable estimates of the numbers of people who are so visually impaired as to be registrable as blind or partially sighted. Many of these people are not in fact registered, and do not therefore have access to the specialist services available. The findings offer a major challenge to all who provide services to disabled people.
