The Supreme Court, as at present constituted, consists of one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices. Previous to the acces sion of the present judges, the Supreme Bench had been occupied by six Chief Justices and thirty Associate Justices. The incumbents of these high positions have been chosen from among the brightest ornaments of the profession of the law. In legal learning, general talents, and personal character, the Supreme Court of the United States, as at present constituted, is fully equal to any that has pre ceded.
