Without lending support to this venerable species of adoration, is it entirely proper to advocate reverence for the persons or the memories of those through whom we exist. Well-regulated family pride is indeed a concomitant, if not an element, of patriotism, and an essential quality for the maintenance and advancement of society, But, in order to render it truly efficacious, creed and practice must go hand in hand the jewel transmitted to unworthy keeping soon loses lustre, the buried skeleton cannot maintain the standard without the aid Of the living descendant. And, further, such a pride should be felt, but not expressed, at least in words: the boaster is usually, and generally with propriety, classed as a snob when glorying in his own achievement, nor can he claim exemption from the term when he relies upon what has been achieved by another.
