Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Trustees and the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Annual Reports of the Resident Physician of the Napa State Asylum for the Insane: 1892-1894
The receipts Of this fund for the two fiscal years ending June 30, 1894, amounted to 51, against 85 for the two fiscal years ending June 30, 1892, showing an increase Of 66. The amount received from board of pay patients was 95. The amount received from this source for the two preceding years was 60, a gain in the last two fiscal years Of 35. While this shows better collections for the last two years, there is yet left a broad margin for improvement. Only a little more than 5 per cent, or about one in twenty, Of the patients in this asylum pay the charge of $15 a month required for board of those who have means.
Since our last biennial report there has been no change in the medical staff or other officers at this asylum. On the 20th day of December, 1892, John Q. Brown, who had been a Trustee of this asylum for nearly nine years, died suddenly at his home in the city of San Francisco. The demise of Mr. Brown was a severe loss to this institution. He had been an esteemed citizen of California for more than forty years, and had honorably filled many responsible positions, both State and munici pal. His strict integrity, great experience. And fine business capacity made him a wise counselor and a valuable member of this Board.
Among the much needed valuable improvements made, your atten tion is specially called to the construction of a convenient, capacious kitchen, a scullery, cold-storage room, meat-room, and a large, commo dions barn, all having been built from stone quarried from a ledge near by, on the asylum premises. Much credit is due to the Resident Physician, Dr. Gardner, in designing admirable plans for the erection of these buildings, with a perfect system for their equipment.
