Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Adjutant General of the State of North Carolina: 1921-1922
Upon arrival in Concord the undersigned found that there were nine cotton mills in the city, only two of which were in operation. These two mills were being picketed by strikers. Troops were immediately thrown around the two mills in question, Company E guarding the Locke Mill, and Com pany F guarding the Younnartsell Mill. The strikers around these two mills were in an ugly humor and were attempting to prevent non-strikers from going to work. They did this by physical violence in some cases. And also by hooting and jeering those who attempted to go in the mills.
