Les voeux de ce fanatique amateur ne se realiserent qu'en 1850, quand il devint employe au Catalogue du departement des imprimes de la Bibliotheque Nationale, qu'il quitta, en 1856, pour passer a la Bi bliotheque Sainte - Geneweve, ou il ne tar da pas_ a etre nomme bibliothecaire, puis conservateur-adjoint. Ses reves etaient accomplis; il'avait enfin des occupations appropriees a ses gouts; rien ne le detour nerait plus de ses etudes favorites. Il put alors consacrer tout son temps a des recher ches bibliographiques (et historiques, et rediger ces innombrables notes qui offrent tant de documents precieux et inedits pour l'histoire bibliographique d'une partie si notable de notre litterature.
