Publisher's Synopsis
Beyond the Devil's Backbone, is a wry, acrobatic collection of poems. Focused on Spanish Wells in the Bahamas, an island the author landed on first as a child, it also includes poems about Haiti, where she lived for six years, and Cuba, a culture that captures her imagination. The poems offer a tableau of deft observations that at times are cheeky with an ironic twist, or lyrically serious infused with a deep regard for the natural.
