This text presents a mid-level of mathematical rigour while supporting the student with careful pedagogy. The book prepares students for their next mathematics course presenting all the topics associated with a first course in algebra. Mathematical concepts are motivated by need and illustrated through discussion, examples and real-world applications. Improvements to this edition have been made in line with NCTM standards, the AMATYC Crossroads, and the current trends in mathematics reform in the late 1990s (for example, more emphasis is placed on graphing and problem solving).
