Publisher's Synopsis
In December 1968 the US Defense Department, based on the optimistic feasibility study completed by SRI awarded a contract to Bolt Beranek & Newman (BBN) to build the ARPANET, the first-ever heterogeneous network. Phase 1 of the ARPANET was extremely modest - the network that has evolved into the 50-million machine Internet began with only four sites (UCLA, SRI, UC Santa Barbara, The University of Utah). This volume presents the four 1969 BBN technical reports that describe the year-long construction and development of the ARPANET, from project commencement to the connection of the first imp processor. This volume also includes a retrospective essay by Dave Walden, ARPANET team member and former VP of BBN, plus an introduction by computer historian/series editor Peter Salus.
