Publisher's Synopsis
This particular module in the "Numeracy Through Problem Solving" series is designed to introduce problem solving into the classroom and assist 13 to 16 year old students to develop mathematical, strategic and social skills whilst taking part in solving realistic problems. It gives students a practical and creative introduction to 3-D geometry providing them with an ideal opportunity to develop geometrical and other designing skills.;The module invites students to design and make a card or paper product, than produce a "kit" containing full instructions so that someone else could recreate the product. A range of mathematical and technical skills can be developed from this exercise, including estimating and measuring lengths and angles, making and testing conjectures, drawing a two-dimensional net of a three-dimensional object, making and using simple levers and linkages and writing clear, concise instructions with diagrams and photographs where appropriate.;This teacher's guide to the module offers ideas on how to use the module to develop particular mathematical techniques and also provides guidelines on how to assess the strategic, technical and social skill aspects of students' work.
