In the spring of 1991, Damir Plavsic was just a 22-year-old veterinary student living in Zagreb, Croatia, when a Croatian war of Independence started by Yugoslav invasion of Croatia. Damir hometown of Vukovar was attacked brutally, in what was to become the bloodiest battle in Europe since WW2, so he went to his hometown to volunteer as a civilian turned soldier. This book describes his day-to-day duties, simultaneously fighting on front lines and caring for civilians, his later POV imprisonment, survival in Serbian concentration camps and eventual freedom.
