Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Ballads of the War
It is with no common solicitude that I venture before the public as an author, knowing as I do these poems to be the hard work of hours snatched from the taxations and relaxations of a mentally exhaustive profession; and it has been a doubt with me, whether they do 'not bear the marks of haste or feebleness, and as a consequence have been stamp ed with tameness; if such Should be the fact, I beg the Public's pardon, and only promise to try and do better in future, or not to do at all.
