This combination desk calendar and nature journal for lovers of the outdoors features weekly engagement pages (Monday to Sunday) which include times of sun rise and set, moon rise and set, moon phase, anniversaries of signal events in the natural history of North America (such as hottest recorded temperature in Death Valley, greatest windspeed on Mount Washington, birthday of Aldo Leopold and passage of Endangered Species Act). Each month opens with an essay tour of North America, with star-gazing infornmation and nature titbits. The left page of each weekly spread is for journal entries. The book contains illustrated vignettes throughout: tree and leaf silhouettes, animal tracks, seasonal flowers, why leaves change colour in autumn, what makes the harvest moon and so on. A quotation highlights each spread. Other features include weather lore, urban animal lore, wilderness ethics and birding lore.
