Publisher's Synopsis
This important first edition includes practical, clinical information on the viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal and parasite infections found in dogs and cats in the UK. The book concentrates on UK diseases, but exotic infections that might be encountered in imported animals, such as babesiosis and heartworm, are covered briefly.
Designed to suit the busy practitioner, the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases has a unique problem–oriented approach, grouping infections by the body system affected rather than by taxonomic classification. Where organisms infect multiple systems, careful cross–referencing between chapters directs the reader to the main details of clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and control. Microbial structure, replication, molecular biology and post–mortem findings that are not directly important to the practitioner are not included.
Diagnostic techniques, including those using molecular biology, are described, as are modern advances in vaccines. Antimicrobial and antiparasitic drugs are described and a mini–formulary is provided as a separate Appendix. Control measures specific to multi–animal environments are also discussed.
Tables and full–colour illustrations are used throughout to highlight important information.
