Publisher's Synopsis
Dignity, autonomy, choice and participation for residents are a low priority for most residential homes. This book deals with an innovatory scheme to introduce change into a residential home, and is an attempt to understand more fully why resident-oriented environments have proved so difficult to achieve and to explore some ways in which such difficulties may be overcome. It describes the planning, implementation and evaluation of an action research project undertaken by the author in collaboration with the staff of a local authority home for older people. Although some positive changes were achieved in the home, there were strong barriers to change, in particular the difficulty of reconciling the dependency of residents with their autonomy.;The book is intended for anyone concerned with the care of frail, elderly people, and particularly for those who provide or plan for residential care.
