After the introduction, the Culex (26 - 34) announces its negative limitations beginning with namque cauit non pagina bellum I Triste Iovis, mentioning the war with the giants, the Lapithae, the move ments of Xerxes, and closing with an adaptation of a line in Lucretius. There is a longer passage of similar mold in Manilius (3, 5 begins with a negative as does the passage in the Culex.
