Registrants from over 50 countries attended the symposium on which this book is based. The programme was built up from the suggestions of the 114 members of national and international programme committees, representing 26 countries. Researchers were invited as speakers, along with established investigators. Scientists with known communication skills were engaged for the state-of-the-art reviews of both basic research and clinical trials. Particular emphasis was placed on genetics, molecular mechanisms and the clinical relevance of research findings: workshops 22-28 in particular were designed to be of major interest to cardiologists and vascular physiologists. Three workshops were devoted to recent advances in therapeutics.
