Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Assignment
The circumstances of my trip were fortunate, especially in war time. I was commissioned by Princeton University's Office of Public Opinion Research to visit a representative cross - section of cities, towns and villages of all sizes and types throughout the country, from Bos ton to Los Angeles and from Seattle to Palatka, Florida. During the first half of 1943 I visited 84 different points in 41 states. My work involved interviewing a number of people in most of these places. In my spare hours, as correspondent for several publications, I had occasion to dig beneath the surface of many cities, towns and villages.
