This text reviews the proceedings of the educational symposium held during the 8th meeting of the International Association of Pancreatology (IAP) in Tokyo, Japan in 1998. It presents the latest results and findings with regard to the treatment of pancreatitis, and includes such topics as: assessment of treatment of severe pancreatitis - protease inhibitor; a novel synthetic anti-acute pancreatitis agent, IS-741; new approaches to acute pancreatitis - the role of inflammatory mediators; and the therapeutic effects of Loxiglumide on experimental acute pancreatitis using various models.
