Thirteen year old Sam Ambrose"s parents have disappeared and are presumed dead. Sam is alone except for one living relative, Grandfather Otter, a wandering magician. Summoning all her courage, Sam runs away into the mysterious Crooked Hills with her beloved dog DeeOGee to search for her grandfather. But DeeOgee races too far ahead and is lost, forcing Sam to travel deeper into the wilderness hills.
When she crosses into an unknown haunt of fierce mythological outcasts, Sam finds she is trapped where the boundaries of real and imagined worlds are blurred by darkness. Unless she can unravel secrets from Grandfather Otter's wizardry writings and cryptic directions from a sorcerous mask maker, her search may be doomed. The choice of which world Sam will live in may no longer be hers.
