Inspector Ghote is more than a little surprised to find the Commissioner of Police outside his house early one morning. The Commissioner, on behalf of famous movie star, Asha Rani, would like Ghote to make a discreet inquiries into the Mira Behn Institute for Medical Research. It seems someone there is smuggling out a dangerous drug, made from the venom of highly poisonous snakes. Ghote's interview points him toward one obvious suspect - he snake-handler Chandra Chagoo. But the Reptile Room is locked and Chagoo is nowhere to be found, until, that is, the Reptile Room is unlocked. There lies the body of Chagoo, a deadly Russell's Vipe slithering cross his back. An accident, or murder?
