Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Ascamot, or Laws and Regulations of the Congregation of Spanish and Portuguese Jews, Entitled Shaar Ha-Shamayim, London: Revised and Amended, 5610-1850
Duly considering how important and beneficial has been the Union of our Congregation, since our settlement in this country, in the year 5416 - 1656, and impressed with the conviction that the preservation of this Union is essential, not only to our present, but to our future welfare, it is resolved that there be not allowed in London and its suburbs (that is, within six miles distance from our present Synagogues) any other than our holy Synagogues of Shaar Ashamaim, unless two-thirds of the votes of the Y ehidim, in meeting assembled, shall decide that another is necessary, when it may be established under such conditions as may then be determined upon.
