The object of this work is to place before the peo ple a biography of the greatest of Italian painters, at once authentic, compact, and inexpensive. The last two requisites are in the province of the publishers; and in order to approximate to the first the author has labored long and earnestly. All the recorded facts of the artist's personal and professional life have here been set forth, with some of the outside in?u emees which combined to shape his course and indi cate the lines for the development of his genius. Many of his famous pictures have also been described, with as much of detail as would interest the general reader; and their oftentimes singular histories are set forth brie?y and without needless words.
