This work presents some of the most recent attempts to use leading-edge artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to solve petroleum industry problems. It opens with an introduction to the techniques that are analyzed in the later chapters: knowledge-based systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, case-based reasoning, qualitative and model-based reasoning and contraint satisfaction systems.;The two main parts of the book, symbolic AI (Part 1) and computational AI (Part 2) are divided into subsections corresponding to the various techniques. These techniques are then reviewed in specific application chapters, so that the reader can choose his path along the symbolic and computational applications contained in the book.
