Publisher's Synopsis

This collection of essays considers the relationship between politics and the literary and visual arts in Italy in the period 1250-1500. Although only Joseph Berrigan's paper deals specifically with literary texts, other contributions include observations concerning the relationship between texts and political goals and actions. The visual arts considered here range from the traditional fine arts categories of painting, sculpture and architecture, to minor art objects such as medals, badges, banners and seals, to the creation of an ephemeral celebration.
