Publisher's Synopsis

Always an interesting topic for discussion, Kenfig has a long and chequered history dating from pre-Roman times. The old town and castle were built by Normans and attacked and burnt by the Welsh on a number of occasions during the Middle Ages. In its day, Kenfig compared in size with neighbouring Cardiff and Swansea, but it succumbed to nature when it was engulfed and buried under the sea. Initially a farming community, the population gradually spread into the surrounding borough which rapidly expanded during the Industrial Revolution with coal mining and iron and steel making. With the aid of some 200 photographs from the author's private collection, this book charts the life and times of Kenfig and its Ancient Borough. The latter embraces the neighbouring communities of Sker, Maudlam, Cornelly, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribwr and Stormy Down.
