La premi�re id�e de ce travail remonte � la lecture du livre, d�j� ancien, de mon regrett� camarade et ami Auguste Couat sur Aristo?zane et l'ancienne Com�die atti�ue Dans cet ou vrage, plein de faits et d'id�es, j'avais rencontr�, relativement au sujet ici trait�, quelques juge ments qui avaient suscit� en mon des doutes s� rieux. C'esten y r�fl�chissant souvent eten m�ris sant ces doutes que j'ai �t� conduit � �crire ce livre. Puisqu'il marque, en somme, une dissi dence entre Couat et moi, je tiens tout partien li�rement a la restreindre d'avance autant qu'il convient, en rendant ici un hommage sinc�re a la haute valeur de son travail.
