Publisher's Synopsis

The book is organized into 5 sections (Practices, Buildings and Projects, Architecture and Sociology, Housing, and Architectural Education) with 14 essays/articles by Gutman, each preceded by a brief introduction setting the context in which it was written. In addition to Gutman?s essays, there are 12 ?Dialogues,? essays written by contemporary architects and theorists in response to Gutman?s essays. These essays were commissioned especially for the book after Gutman?s death. Dana Cuff, one of the book?s editors and a friend of Robert Gutman, wrote a preface for the book as well.
