Publisher's Synopsis
The book gathers a series of contributions from the excavation and study of the Roman villa of San Marco on the island of Elba, its finds and its historical and environmental context. The archaeological findings pertain to a very short period of life of the settlement, approximately between the second century BC and the second century AD, when the villa was probably destroyed by fire. This dramatic event allowed the extraordinary preservation of a series of organic finds, through which it was possible to proceed with a detailed reconstruction of the building's plan. The study of the incredible pictorial decorations, together with the epigraphic findings, have made it possible to attribute the villa to one of the properties of the important senatorial family of the Valerii.
