Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Annual Report of the Secretary of the Treasury on the State of the Finances: For the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1972
This strong rise in real output was accompanied by very rapid gains in employment. Between the second quarters of calendar years 1971 and 197 2, total civilian employment rose by million persons. Ordinarily, the sharp rise ih employment that occurred in fiscal 197 2 would have been associated with a substantial fall in the rate of unemployment. However, in response to improving business condi tions, the civilian labor force expanded by million persons, a gain almost as large as that in employment. This unusual increase in the labor force kept the total rate of unemployment in the neighborhood of 6 percent-during the early part of the year, but the decline to percent in the second quarter of calendar 1972 and to percent in June should be a signal of lower rates to come.
