The exigencies of the times have not made it neces sary to reduce the pay of the instructors, or to deprive the children of any of the advantages of education. But the Superintendent of Public Schools, and the greater part of the male teachers, desiring to share the burdens and sacrifices of their fellow-citizens, offered to the city a portion of their salaries, amounting to more than This noble gift was, however, declined by the City Government, and a vote was passed thanking the superintendent, masters, and subordinate teachers for their generosity.
