The number of births, excluding stillbirths, was giving a birth rate of per population. This is points less than last year. Considerable effort was made during the year to obtain a more complete registration Of births, and we feel that progress was made. There is no doubt, however, that many are still nu recorded. Some people do not appear to appreciate the import ance of having a child's birth registered, ' and look. Upon it as a formality which has no particular significance. This is a senti ment which cannot be too strongly deprecated. A birth certificate may prove of the utmost value to the individual in after life, par ticularly. As regards legacies, military service, pensions, life insur ance and other matters in which it may be necessary to furnish proof of age.
