In the second period, 1860 - 90, psychology became the master science in the nor mal schools, and logical courses of study In all the branches naturally followed. New courses in music, drawing, and manual arts, laboratory science, and the social studies took their places with the Older subjects.
The third period, 1890 - 1909, was the active period of teachers' institutes, in which many members of the normal school faculties took leading parts. During the period the wide-spread nature study movement developed, which led to the establishment of natural science gardens and greenhouses at several normal schools.
The fourth period, from 1910, onward, marks the rapid growth of the junior. High school movement, with the consequent development of the f our-year normal course culminating In the degree-granting power In 1929, the minimum elemen tary course was extended to three years, and, in 1931, the minimum junior high course was made four years.
