The number of prosecutions made by this department shows a decrease when compared with last year's work. This may be attributed to the improvement in trade conditions relating to weights and measures, due to vigilant inspection by the State and local authorities, the result being a perceptible decrease in short weight offences. The reports of the local depart ments, however, show an increase in the number of proseou tions over that of the preceding year.
