The principal business of this office during the year has been, like all preceding ones since the war, the investigating of military records, and answering the various inquiries of officials, of late officers and men, of their heirs or agents relative to the enlistment, muster, credit or discharge of soldiers in the volunteer service. Most care fully prepared certificates of these facts are daily required, and the demand therefor seems steadily to increase. The research and labor requisite to furnish the information needed even in a single case.
