Excerpt from Anniversary Discourse Delivered Before the Columbian Institute on the 7th January, 1826
Could a Spaniard of those days, even the most polished and refined, be permitted to revisit the earth, and appear among us in the dress and man ner of his time, we should probably look upon him as little better than a barbarian; while he himself would find, perhaps, as many causes of wonder and astonishment, in the changes and improvements which have taken place in our manners, modes of life, and means of advancing in knowledge, as the poor Indians found in Columbus and his ?eet.
