The growth of urban population during the past century in Europe and the United States has been so marked as to excite the universal attention of students of our social, industrial and political conditions. Not only has the popu lation living in cities increased enormously in absolute numbers during the last hundred years throughout the world affected by European civilization; but the proportion of the total population dwelling in cities has increased in almost as remarkable a manner. This is true no matter how we define the expression urban population, so long as we give a reasonable sense to the term.
