The Phoenician mariners how ever succeeded better than Daedalus and his son Icarus and although of the three artificial modes of conveyance, the chariot, the ship, and the balloon, which civilization has added to the natural motion of our pedestrian species, travelling by air is by far the most agreeable and expeditious, it has been the last that has been accomplished, and is the least likely to be brought to perfection and rendered a useful science.
