The Author Bibliography aims to give an analysis and critical appreciation of each book and article, brie?y or more at length in proportion to the importance of the work from the standpoint of the anthropologist. Nearly all second-hand works, and even most of the first - hand sources, demanded only short annotations; for, while the list of those who have written of the. Fuegians and Chonos from per sonal observation is a comparatively long one, extending through nearly four centuries, the great majority of these explorers have had at the most merely a few hours of contact with the natives. Their descriptions are nearly always exact, and often valuable for the more obvious phases of material culture, but in most other respects have to be used with caution.
The bibliographies of somatology and linguistics are designed to be as exhaustive as possible; those dealing with culture are selective and are cast in the form of cultural outlines with emphasis on the biblio graphical side.
