Introduction A mind devoid of detachment cannot sustain on the path of morality or liberation. This detachment should be preferably based in discrimination or reason. All the schools of Indian philosophy that I have discussed here hold this basic position and this is what I would like to prove throughout my thesis. The importance and significance of detachment for the present world is what I have tried to decipher at the end of the thesis. All the previous chapters thus have been used as a constructive argument to build the foundation of this contention. The Advaita-Veda¯nta philosophy has very emphatically, precisely and convincingly put forward this point, hence, primarily I have tried focus on it in my work. Mind has been called the primary cause of both bondage and liberation depending on attachment and detachment respectively. A detailed analysis of this fact, throughout all the traditions discussed here, has been the objective and endeavor of the work. In the Bhagavadgi¯ta¯, Arjuna has admitted that mind is fickle, wild, stubborn and strong by nature and its control is as difficult as controlling air.
