Publisher's Synopsis
This book investigates the relationships between analytical chemistry of inorganic and organic pollutants and the knowledge of their fate in ecosystems. It opens with proposals for ecotoxicological criteria for the assessment of the dynamic behaviour of pollutants in the environment, and goes on to study methods and instrumentation, emphasizing techniques that allow increased resolution and sensitivity without sacrificing reliability. Subsequent papers examine recent advances in research into areas such as the impact and fate of heavy metals in ecosystems, and halogenated compounds in soil. The book also presents studies of pollution by detergents with a view to protecting natural inland waters, and hydrocarbons, another group of pollutants that require constant investigation. The papers in this volume have previously been published in the "International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry" and the journal "Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry".
