Publisher's Synopsis

By the end of the 20th century, the National Health Service was falling apart. A lack of monetary support by the Ministry of Health was the overriding factor that forced doctors and nurses to seek employment in other countries. In the year 2014, after a number of scandals involving the unnecessary deaths of thousands of patients due to a decline in the quality of care, the NHS was abolished and numerous medical insurance firms took over the responsibility of caring for Britain's sick and injured. After ten years they ran into monetary difficulties, a solution was needed - one was found and implemented. After years of sexual and physical abuse, Mary Collins murders her parents; a drug addict mother and a drunken stepfather, and joins the army. After ten years in a special combat unit, she finds herself with the rest of her comrades, unemployed. But, she is offered a job as an executioner as criminals are now no longer tried in a court of law; they are convicted and exterminated as soon as possible. Mary is happy in her work until one day her friend tells her the truth behind her gruesome job.
