All that the writer ventures to hope is that he has suggested thoughts upon one of the most important problems in our national life, and that he has been able to give sufficient historical grounds for the suggestions made. The materials lay at hand; he has merely sought to weave them together. In preparing the Second Edition attention has been paid to the suggestions made upon points of detail by reviewers and others. For this valuable help, as well as for the generous welcome which the book has received, the author desires to express his very sincere gratitude. The Index to Authors at the end of the book is intended to enable readers to obtain a more connected view of the contributions to English educational opinion of the principal writers and theorists referred to.
