The reception of the writer's larger books on the history of English has suggested one with still fewer details than the Brief History. In this Outline an attempt has been made to chronicle the general facts of our language development, the special in?uences of different periods, and the more important changes in the forms of words. Espe cially it emphasizes development by natural proc esses. It thus explains much that has often been set down in dogmatic statement only, or sometimes in a manner at variance with historic facts. It should therefore be useful in connection with the study of English grammar and English usage.
