It is 1892 and Lizzie Flintoff lives with her parents behind a small shop in Whitby, where her father makes and sells jewellery in the famous Whitby jet. However, the business is failing. Then the owner of the property tells them he wishes to sell it to someone for a bakery, and the Flintoffs must leave. They arrange to share a relative's cottage but, unfortunately, there is no room for Lizzie. When the elderly man Lizzie has always called "Uncle Jack" says he is willing to marry her, she is faced with a heart-rending decision...
